Upon crossing the border from the modern world, in the Enchanted Hills, all characters are subject to the “Aura” - A passive, constant force which decays, rots, and ultimately destroys anything not made by human hands. Electricity cases to work within seconds, and complex machinery begins to fall apart. This has a wide range of effects; As simple as having an elastic hair-tie crumble to dust, to having a pickup truck swiftly begin to fall apart, rust, and eventually have the engine block come to a grinding halt.
Firearms and guns will work in the Enchanted Hills, however only for the first several minutes of exposure to the aura. Quickly after, hammers will rust, chambers will decay, and bullets begin to corrode.
The reason for this aura [story reasons aside, obviously] is to create an environment where both modern and fantasy based characters can truly interact and coexist in one singular gaming entity. Many of the characters are made up of modern characters, however they are stuck in a world where modern technology does not work, or even exist. It should be noted that the time period is still in fact modern day - Characters that leave the Enchanted Hills and return know all about the latest movies, cars, news, etc. This leads to some interesting character development, as some modern characters take quite a while to cease mourning the loss of their cell phones to the aura.
By day, the Enchanted Hills is a blooming paradise, much like the American west before it was settled. Mostly untouched by human hands, with breathtaking scenery. The sun shines warmly and a wide variety of unique, as well as mundane, wildlife prowls the lands.
But night, however, is a different story. Temperatures drop to freezing levels every night from May to September, dangerously cold in the winter, and warm and mild in the spring until the cycle beings again. At nightfall, all manner of life seems to cease. Birds hide, bugs do not chirp and to an extent, even the wind seems to stop. The undead own the land, sighted frequently in the darkness. Settlers of these lands are at a constant state of readiness to defend their lives. It is well known that when the sun begins to set, the wisest thing to do would be to find yourself behind the walls of one of the major cities if possible, or hiding in a cave of some sort.
The Enchanted Hills does not have a “ranking system” for its membership. You will not find Generals or Colonels unless they are in fact a legitimate military leader. The closest thing you will see are either the “Nobles”, which are the appointed officials of towns, cities, strongholds, and tasks; “Masters”, leaders of a division such as the Crimson Company Mercenaries, or the Academy of Arcane Arts; Or the “Highlord”, who for all intents and purposes is comparable to a King.
The Nobles, which are appointed by the Highlord, rule and oversee their individual towns or cities; However they all answer to the Highlord. Role play wise the political structure is divided into a class base much like many points in history; Upper, Middle, Lower, etc. Primarily based on economy - those with wealth will find themselves not only having a much easier time, but having power in their own right.
While every Noble has a different style of ruling, the Highlord is generally observed as a figure not to be taken lightly. The City Capital, as well as surrounding lands, are held under a Dictatorship/Monarchy in his name. Namely, his world is law - a fact recognized by slave, noble, ally, and enemy.
