The rudimentary expression of ability is the dice system. Combat Dice are used for melee combat and damage, and are increased through equipment, leveling, medals, feats, and abilities. Action Dice are used for role-playing checks and are increased through other means, such as recruiting, forum role-playing, and feats. Some equipment may also increase action dice.

Aside from dice, there are other vitals that each character will have attributed to them such as Health, Mana, and Critical Strike Threshold. There are more vitals in the game than these, and they are all discussed in detail elsewhere in this manual.

Difficulty Check

A Difficulty Check is a value, or a set of values, that must be reached in order to “pass” any given attempt. The word 'pass' is used loosely, as it should be understood that some things will have detrimental outcomes no matter what the rolls. Though, very often, things may be attempted and succeed by meeting the given challenge.

Combat Dice

The combat dice are a character's general offensive strength. While at times, combat dice might be used to represent a challenge, or a check, they are typically rolled for the purpose of dealing damage. While the combat dice do demonstrate how much damage a character could do on any given strike, they may be interpreted in many different ways.

Typically, the results of anything involving combat dice are calculated by referring to the Melee Hit Table. As a general rule of thumb, every “attack” has an inherit chance to fail. This might be interpreted as the target avoiding it entirely, or inaccuracy on the part of the attacker, and so on. The value required to “hit” a target is known as the Difficulty Check .

Action Dice

Action dice are used for situational encounters that require something other than combat to succeed in addition to having a level of difficulty which would possibly not be able to be done under a degree of stress. The situation will generally be requested by the Game Master, however at any point and time a player may request an action roll to attempt a specific action.
